I meant to "into his skull"(hence the skull your guy is holding could be his own) but the living phylactery is also an option. I almost forgot. Awesome work by the way!

How about this: Once upon a time a young prince was cast out of his soon to be kingdom by his father the king and his guards for practicing forbidden blood rituals and dark magic requiring the bones of his kin. On the faithful night he was caught red-handed and in a moment of desperation he enacted a ritual that would bind his bones and armor together with all the bones of his victims. At the close of the ritual he was decapitated by his own father, binding his sons essence into his making the prince an unfortunate lich. But the prince escaped his would be executors and was forever banished and bestowed with a new mantle and kingdom of his own making, a kingdom where he would reign alone forever for the dead, no matter their numbers, reign alone, The Fallen Prince Morticus, the prince of bones.
